As specialists in scout hut heating, we know that there are specific challenges. Older scout huts may have poor insulation and they can be draughty and expensive to heat.

It may be the case that your existing scout hut heating is a convection based system. This is usually ineffective at heating large spaces.

Most of the warm air rises into the ceiling void. Only when the air cools does it descend towards the floor where everyone feels the benefit. These convection currents also draw in outside air through the leaky doors and windows, creating unpleasant cold drafts and cooling the hut.

“We love the new heating system and I think that it is brilliant. Everyone keeps warm now. The warmth generated by the ARC Thermal units feels just like the sun, first thing in the morning, when you’re camping. I can programme everything via the app now!”
~ Colin Karslake, Group Scout Leader, Basingstoke Air Scouts

Convection based heating also creates problems when adhering to the new COVID-19 guidelines regarding enclosed spaces. Opening windows means that you lose the warm air you have paid to heat. What is more, convection currents facilitate the spread of viruses.

Alternatively, you may have the old style short-wave infrared bar heaters which glow. They are hard to regulate. They create focused areas of heating and leave ‘cold spots’ throughout the hut. They also make you ‘hot-headed’, when standing directly underneath them!

As specialists in scout, girl guide and air cadet hut heating, we have a solution for you.

Perfect for sleepovers

Thermal heaters create warmth at floor level: perfect for sleepovers! Avoid cold draughts caused by convection heating. Maintain just the right temperature, throughout the day, evening and night.

Infrared heating for your scout hut

Infrared energy generated by medium and long-wave infrared heaters and panels travels inertly through the air.

It dissipates as heat upon contact with people and surfaces. This creates a comfortable, all-round radiant warmth at lower air temperature.

The medium-wave heaters are ideal for ambient heating of large spaces like scout huts or girl guides huts, whilst the more gentle long-wave panels are suited to ancillary rooms with lower ceilings.

Infrared heat takes minutes to reach comfortable temperatures. Energy is not wasted in prolonged warm-up times.

If external doors are opened, allowing cold air to enter the hut, radiant heating will recover comfortable temperatures in minutes. The infrared energy is stored safely in the thermal mass of the building, not in the air which has very poor thermal properties.

Infrared is also good for the building. This is in contrast to convection heating, where the moisture held within warm air condenses when it meets a cold surface. In turn, convection heating increases the likelihood of mould, wood rot, salt damp or flaking paintwork.

Infrared warms surfaces directly, which prevents condensation from forming.

Grant funding

European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is offering an energy efficient grant funding to help enterprises save money and greenhouse gas emissions by improving energy efficiency.

The energy efficiency grant may cover between 25% – 40% of the overall cost (capital and installation) of the project.
